Why Your Safety Network Matters More Than You Think

I’m often asked why I started HaloGuard and here’s why !

A few years ago I had an accident. I was on my own, hurt, and couldn’t get help. Nobody knew there was a problem, so nobody came. By the time I did get help, my injuries were much worse than they needed to be and my recovery took much longer as a result.

That experience changed me. Not just physically, but in how I see safety and how frustrated I get when I watch people treat it as an afterthought.

Because here’s the thing. Most people fall into one of two camps.

The first camp thinks it won’t happen to them. Nothing bad has happened so far, so why would it now? I get it. I used to think the same. Until I didn’t.

The second camp thinks emergency services will be enough. Just call 111, right? Except what happens when you can’t call?

Emergency services are incredible but they can’t help you if they don’t know you need help.

That gap between something going wrong and help actually arriving is exactly what HaloGuard was built for.

Before we built the app, we asked a lot of people we knew a question – in an emergency, who would you most want to contact?

The answer was overwhelming. Not a stranger. Not a call centre. Their partner. Their mum. Their best friend. Someone who knows them, loves them, and will drop everything without needing an explanation.

We then made a conscious decision to build HaloGuard around that human connection. The idea that the people already in your life, the ones who know you are your greatest safety asset. Technology should strengthen those connections, not replace them with a stranger on a phone.

What Happens When You Have Your People Behind You

When you activate a HaloGuard alert, it goes straight to your chosen Guardians. Your people.

They get your live GPS location and a live audio stream of what’s happening around you, right then, in real time. So they can hear what’s going on, see where you are, and decide the best thing to do. Whether that’s calling 111, jumping in the car, or just staying connected until you’re safe.

No waiting. No explaining yourself under pressure.

One of our users, Jude, put it better than I could:

“I used it within a couple of days and was amazed at how quickly help arrived. My Guardian was able to explain exactly what was happening and where I was. It’s well worth having.”

And Nicole, who used HaloGuard during a challenging moment:

“I was feeling very low and pressed my alarm. Within 10 minutes my dad came and picked up my son and my mum dropped everything and took me out for a walk. That helped a lot.”

That’s what this is about. People showing up for each other in real moments. HaloGuard just makes it possible.

Safety Should Never Cost You Your Privacy

Something else that matters to me and to the people who use HaloGuard, is control.

You are always in charge. Your location is never tracked in the background. Alerts are activated by you, when you decide. Your information goes only to the people you have personally chosen as your Guardians.

For survivors of family violence, for people managing mental health challenges, for older New Zealanders who value their independence , this is not a small thing. Safety should never come at the cost of your dignity or your privacy. Ever.

This Is for Real People Living Real Lives

HaloGuard works on iPhone and Android, with optional Samsung Galaxy Watch support if you want hands-free access or fall detection. Our Critical Alert technology means your Guardians get notified even if their phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb. Because if you need help, your call should never go unheard.

It’s for the nurse walking to her car after a night shift. The student walking home late. The parent living alone. The worker out on a remote site. The person who just wants a little more confidence going about their day.

It’s for anyone who has ever thought, even for a second, “what if something happened and nobody knew?”

I know that feeling. It’s why I built this.

Don’t Wait Until Something Goes Wrong

Please don’t be complacent about your safety. Don’t assume it won’t happen to you. Don’t assume someone will just know you need help.

Build your safety network now, before you need it. Ask your people to be your Guardians. Give them the tools to reach you, and for you to reach them.

It takes minutes to set up. And it could make all the difference.
