October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Not only is it important to raise awareness of this silent epidemic, but also raise awareness of the different types of Domestic Violence. Did you know that domestic violence isn’t just about physical and sexual abuse? Many women may not even recognise the signs because their partners never lay a hand on them. It’s crucial to understand that abuse can take many forms, and all are serious.

Here are some common types of domestic violence:

Emotional Abuse: This includes manipulation, constant criticism, humiliation, and controlling behaviour that erodes self-esteem and mental health.

Verbal Abuse: Name-calling, yelling, and threats are all forms of verbal abuse. These words can leave deep emotional scars.

Financial Abuse: Controlling finances, restricting access to money, or sabotaging a partner’s job can create a dependency that is incredibly isolating.

Psychological Abuse: This includes gaslighting, where the abuser makes the victim question their reality and perceptions, leading to confusion and self-doubt.

Digital Abuse: Monitoring social media accounts, excessive texting, or using technology to stalk or harass are forms of abuse that are becoming increasingly common.

Remember, abuse is about power and control, not love. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these forms of abuse, it’s important to reach out for help. You are not alone, and there are resources available.
